How to Create a Lead Magnet that Converts to Build Your Email List

How to Create a Lead Magnet that Converts to Build Your Email List:

Listen. No one wants to spend all their time marketing their business. You've got more important things to do.

If you're looking to get more sales while you sleep from your online marketing efforts, one of the best ways to do so is by creating a lead magnet that builds your email list.

(This is my specialty and why people are so excited about Audience On Autopilot Academy.)

When you have an email list, you rely less on the algorithm showing your posts to your audience, and more on building a relationship with your customers KNOWING your message is reaching them via email!

(This gives the control to YOU!)

Plus, email is one of the most effective ways to make sales.

In fact, for every $1 spent on email marketing, there's a return of $42 in revenue according to a study done by Hubspot in 2021!

Creating an email list starts with the lead magnet—the free gift or low-cost offer that entices people to give you their email so you can communicate with them on a regular basis about what your business can help them with.

The right lead magnet will turn into new subscribers for free or little cost!

So, how do you create a lead magnet that converts?

Well, before we get into how to create a lead magnet that people actually WANT, let's take a look at some common mistakes people make when creating their lead magnet:

  • Not providing enough value in the lead magnet itself
  • Offering a lead magnet that's irrelevant to their audience
  • Creating a lead magnet that's too complex or difficult to use

Lead magnets need to provide an "easy & quick win" for your audience relative to what YOUR business is about.

And, now that we know what NOT to do, let's take a look at how you can create a lead magnet that actually converts!

(This information can be found in Module 3: The BAKER Method if you are a student in Audience On Autopilot already!)

How to Create a Lead Magnet that Converts:

Step 1: Define your audience & call to action

When creating a lead magnet, it's important to define your audience and the call to action you want them to take after consuming your magnet.

The whole goal of a lead magnet is to lead into a bigger sale.

So, naturally, you need to understand their NEXT NATURAL STEP with you in your business.

Example:

If I own a bakery, what do I want my lead magnet to entice them to do next? This will be the call to action.

Let's say I want someone to buy my "allergy-free take and bake kits" from my store, I want to create a lead magnet that will attract people who would likely do that.

So, who do I think would walk into my store and take home a take & bake kit to use?

A local mom of a child with food allergies, of course!

CALL TO ACTION? Buy our take & bake kits

AUDIENCE? Local moms of children with food allergies

Easy, right?

Without having clarity on who your target market is and what you want them to do next, it'll be difficult to create an effective lead magnet.

Step 2: WOW Them With Benefits

When thinking about the actual CONTENT of your lead magnet, we need to first understand the BENEFIT of the call to action, which is the take & bake kits in our example.

Then we need to SUPERCHARGE the lead magnet with those benefits!

So, what could be the benefits of using a take & bake kit?

Example of Benefits:

  • They save time
  • They're safe for their kids
  • They taste delicious
  • They're easy to make

Now, we need to make sure our lead magnet has THE SAME BENEFITS to make it REALLY enticing!

So, what if we gave away 7 easy and delicious recipes for families that have food allergies?

Okay, that's getting there...but we could Google that, right?

Instead, let's remember our audience & call to action from Step 1.

They are LOCAL moms and we want them to walk into the store and buy our take & bake kits...

We could make an even BETTER lead magnet by putting the "wow" factor in and increasing the value they get with our lead magnet...

Example:

How about including a list of ingredients AND where to buy them locally at the best price? Maybe it's hard to find allergy-friendly ingredients for these moms. Maybe they don't know where the best deal is? Maybe they're just at the beginning of the food allergy journey and they're overwhelmed about what to do.

When you AMPLIFY the benefits and "wow" them with a valuable (but quick) lead magnet, you're much more likely to get the sale in the end!

Step 3: Create A Mouth-Watering Emotional Title

You could have the best lead magnet in the world, but if your title doesn't make someone want to consume it...you're sunk.

When creating a title for your lead magnet, you want to get creative and use emotional words that make people WANT what you have.

Most people come up with "ho-hum" titles for their lead magnets. And THAT is why no one opts in- it's not the lead magnet that stinks!

"Ho-Hum" Title Examples:

  • 7 Dessert Recipes and Where to Buy the Ingredients
  • My Bakery's Recipe and Ingredient Guide
  • 7 Desserts That Are Allergy-Friendly

BORING!

Let's ramp it up with some words that spark emotion in our audience - remember, people buy based on EMOTION.

Example of Emotional Titles:

  • The Ultimate Guide to Allergy - Friendly Desserts The Whole Family Can Enjoy
  • 7 Decadent Desserts For Your Allergy-Free Child: Recipe & Shopping Guide
  • Our Town's Guide To 7 Quick & Easy Allergy-Friendly Desserts That Delight

Much better!

(In Audience On Autopilot Academy, I share my favorite tools for creating headlines just like these...check it out!)

Can you see why EMOTIONAL headlines are important for lead magnets because they entice people to want the information?

A boring headline will make people scroll right past your content, but a tantalizing headline will make them want to learn more.

Creating a title that makes people drool with anticipation will be more likely to convert into a customer!

Additionally, a great headline will help you to stand out from the competition. (Unless you're a marketer, headlines can be frustrating!)

Next Steps:

Now that you understand how to create a lead magnet that converts, it's time to build that list!

  • Remember to think about your target market and what they would want.
  • Then, WOW them with benefits that are irresistible.
  • Finally, make sure your title is catchy and sparks emotion in your audience.

When you do all of these things correctly, you're well on your way to building an email list from scratch that will help grow your business!
